The starting point

The battery passport is mandatory - the data is not yet ready

01

Passport + QR per unit

Every single battery needs its own passport and a unique QR code - not the model, the unit.

02

Data is scattered

Information sits in certificates, spreadsheets and with suppliers - barely anyone keeps it in one place.

03

Enterprise tools are too slow

Large compliance platforms are expensive and sluggish. Mid-sized companies need something that runs in days, not quarters.

The pain point

Why almost no one delivers this reliably today

Three realities make the battery passport hard - and they all hit at the same time. That is exactly where we come in.

01 · Today

Data sits in 6+ sources

Material certificates as PDFs, BOMs in Excel, LCA values from a consultant, supplier answers in email, serials from the ERP. No one keeps it in one place.

Manual consolidation per model: 3–8 weeks.
02 · Volume

One passport per unit - not per model

The passport is physical, per battery. A single approved model spawns thousands of serialised passports with a unique QR - ready to print or engrave.

Mass generation instead of copy-paste.
03 · Audit

Market surveillance can check at any time

Authorities, recyclers and customers all read the same QR - but in different roles. Gaps in the supply chain mean a shipment stop and personal liability for management.

A single missing value blocks the whole shipment.

    Once per model
  2. 02

    Import serial numbers

Upload a CSV or Excel - and Batteriepasswerk generates thousands of passports including unique QR codes automatically.

    Thousands at once
  3. 03

    Ship the QR codes

Print- and engraving-ready codes, plus the public passport page with role-based access for authorities and recyclers.

Data sourcing

How the passport looks is carpentry. Where the data comes from is the craft

The QR code and the display are the smallest problem. The values behind them sit with suppliers, in test reports and in the ERP. That is why Batteriepasswerk is first of all a data intake: four routes bring every value into the passport with provenance, evidence and approval.

63%of manufacturers name data availability and quality as the biggest hurdle
51%name the integration of supplier data as the most laborious part

Which value comes from where?

Before you pick a tool, settle responsibility. The decision does not depend on the field but on a single question: who creates this information?

Evidence

Seven documents. Three go in the passport

“There are hundreds of certificates - which do I need?” The regulation names exactly three as passport content. Everything else is evidence behind a value: it matters to market surveillance, but it is not a passport entry.

Supply Chain Trust & Assurance

Data auditors can trust - cryptographically proven

Authorities, OEM buyers and recyclers rely on your passport data. That is why Batteriepasswerk seals every change in a SHA-256 hash chain: tamper-evident, audit-proof and publicly verifiable - without blockchain overhead.

01

Sealed versions

Every change to a model or passport creates a new version. Its SHA-256 hash includes the hash of its predecessor - retroactive edits break the chain and surface immediately.

02

Audit-proof audit trail

Who, what, when: recorded automatically at the database level, append-only, impossible to delete or overwrite. Enforced in the platform core, not in app code.

03

Publicly verifiable

Every passport page carries its integrity proof, and an open verification endpoint validates the full chain on demand - for auditors without an account.

04

Traceable provenance

Supplier data and certificates with source and timestamp; professional access by recyclers and authorities is approved individually and logged without gaps.

How the hash chain works

Built for Art. 78 (g)/(h) of EU Battery Regulation 2023/1542: protection against manipulation and traceability of every change.

Frequently asked

What manufacturers ask most

Where does the data for the battery passport actually come from?
From four sources: your own master data (ERP or PIM via Excel import), your suppliers (self-service link without login, in three languages, with proof upload), your evidence (UN 38.3, datasheets, certificates, from which the AI proposes values with page and quote) and from operation (BMS telemetry and lifecycle events via API). Every value carries its provenance, and the readiness view shows what is still missing.
My cell manufacturer is in China and does not reply. What then?
Three levers: the self-service link works in Chinese and without an account, reminders run automatically after 7 and 14 days, and for purchasing the dashboard generates a data annex to the order as a PDF (DE/EN/ZH) with exactly the open fields, a deadline and the legal basis per field. Anchored in the contract, almost every supplier delivers.
Do I need a separate passport for every battery?
Yes. The EU Battery Regulation requires a separate digital battery passport with a QR code per unit, not per model. Batteriepasswerk serialises thousands of passports automatically from a single model template.
What about the carbon footprint? Do we have to deliver it already?
Not at present. In July 2026 the European Commission clarified that the carbon footprint declaration and label are not to be filled in from February 2027 yet; no date has been set. Batteriepasswerk keeps the field visible as "not yet applicable" with the reason instead of hiding it. Once the delegated act arrives, a rule update makes it mandatory without any rebuild on your side. We do not calculate the value: you provide the LCA figure, we store and display it in line with the regulation.
How do I prove to an inspector where a value came from?
Every field change is recorded in the provenance log: source (manual, supplier, document, import, telemetry), evidence (file, page, quote, confidence), approver and time. In addition, a SHA-256 hash chain seals every version of model and passport; verification is public and possible without an account.
What happens with second life, repair or recycling?
A repair does not change the passport but is logged as an event. According to the Commission, repurposing or remanufacturing creates a new passport with a new QR code and a new responsible operator; Batteriepasswerk creates the successor passport chained to the original. With recycling the passport ends. Second-life batteries are also exempt from certain manufacturer obligations, and the obligation matrix takes that into account automatically.
Does the battery passport have to be registered in the EU registry?
Yes. The EU DPP registry has been in force since August 2026, and a passport must be registered before the battery is placed on the market. The Commission has not yet enabled battery registration itself; the interface is announced for late 2026. Batteriepasswerk already assigns the registry-compliant short link per passport and tracks verification status and mandate in the dashboard, so on activation day you only upload.
Is the battery passport a Digital Product Passport (DPP)?
Yes. The battery passport is the EU's first legally mandatory Digital Product Passport: unique identifier, QR code as data carrier, role-based data access. Exactly the architecture the Ecodesign Regulation (ESPR 2024/1781) will require for many more product groups.
Who does the 2027 battery passport obligation apply to?
The battery passport obligation applies from 18 February 2027 to manufacturers, importers and distributors placing EV, LMT or industrial batteries above 2 kWh on the EU market. Anyone who has not implemented EU Battery Regulation 2023/1542 by then risks market exclusion and fines.
How do I create or generate a digital battery passport?
With battery passport software like Batteriepasswerk: you set up a battery model once with the mandatory data from Annex XIII, and the solution generates serialised passports including a QR code (GS1 Digital Link) for every unit. EU-compliant under Regulation 2023/1542 and DIN DKE SPEC 99100, with no IT project of your own.
Which standards and data points is the passport based on?
The mandatory fields follow the European Commission's official data point list (71 points, August 2026 edition) per battery category and deadline. The data structure follows DIN DKE SPEC 99100, the QR code follows GS1 Digital Link. Data is hosted in the EU.
What should manufacturers look for when choosing battery passport software?
Five points: conformity with EU 2023/1542 and DIN DKE SPEC 99100, mass serialisation instead of one-by-one editing, GS1 Digital Link QR codes per unit, EU hosting with role-based access and above all data sourcing: supplier self-service, data takeover from evidence and provenance per value. You can find a side-by-side comparison of the approaches on our comparison page.
Can I use public funding?
Onboarding and digitalisation projects can be eligible for funding depending on the region and programme. Please check eligibility individually; we can support with documentation.
