Batteriepasswerk takes the other route and ships a finished battery passport application with immutability already built in, as a SHA-256 hash chain any auditor can recompute without an account and without joining a network.

The short answer

An identity platform is a different thing from a finished passport product

Spherity, based in Dortmund, has been building decentralised identity since 2017. Its product family covers VERA for digital product passports, EIDA for enterprise identity under eIDAS 2.0 and CARO for the pharmaceutical supply chain. In 2024 the company presented a battery passport solution with RCS Global as the first Catena-X certified solution of its kind. VERA is white-label ready and spans batteries, textiles, tyres, metals and furniture. The website does not publish prices.

Batteriepasswerk is not a toolkit but the finished application for exactly one obligation. You get the mandatory-field logic of the EU data-point list, mass serialisation, a GS1 Digital Link QR code per unit, the three access levels of the regulation and tamper protection as part of the product, with no credential architecture, no wallet roll-out and no ecosystem membership as a precondition.

Choose Spherity if

verifiable credentials are a strategic given, you want several product categories and regulations on one platform, you work inside the Catena-X data space, or you want to run identity and proof as your own infrastructure across several regulations.

Choose Batteriepasswerk if

What Spherity is genuinely good at

Spherity works on one of the most demanding parts of the digital product passport. Three points we explicitly acknowledge.

Cryptographically signed claims

The platform builds on W3C standards for decentralised identifiers and verifiable credentials. That proves not only that data is unchanged but also who issued it and whether they were entitled to. For multi-tier chains of attestation it is the more powerful construction.

Catena-X and the EU wallet

The battery passport solution presented with RCS Global was communicated as the first Catena-X certified solution of its kind, and VERA points to integration with the EU Business Wallet under eIDAS 2.0. If you are heading into those ecosystems anyway, this is a vendor that is native to them.

Several regulations, one platform

Beyond the Battery Regulation, VERA addresses the Ecodesign Regulation and further legal acts across industries. If you carry textiles or tyres alongside batteries you do not have to run those obligations in separate systems.

Why manufacturers pick the shorter route to proof

Audit-proof records are the goal; verifiable credentials are one way there. Batteriepasswerk gets there with fewer moving parts, and without your auditors installing a wallet.

Immutability without infrastructure

Every version of a model and passport is hashed with SHA-256, and each hash includes its predecessor. Change something after the fact and the chain breaks visibly. No key management on your side, no wallet on your auditor's side.

Verifiable without an account

Every public passport page carries its integrity proof, and an open endpoint validates the full chain on demand. Market surveillance, buyers and recyclers check it in the browser, without registering and without joining a data space.

Audit trail in the core, not in the app

Who changed what and when is recorded at database level, append-only, impossible to delete or overwrite. That holds for changes through the API and for values suppliers entered themselves.

Provenance on every single value

Each value knows where it came from: entered manually, delivered by a supplier, extracted from evidence and released, or received through the API. That provenance is part of the passport, not a note beside it.

Role-based access, granted case by case

Recyclers and authorities apply for professional access, the operator decides per request, and every retrieval is logged. Recyclers see the disassembly instructions, authorities the full scope. That mirrors the access logic of the regulation instead of approximating it.

Connectable when the time comes

The REST API v1 to OpenAPI 3.1 connects ERP and MES today, and export to Catena-X and AAS is in preparation. You are not closing the door to the data space, you simply walk through it once a customer actually asks.

Verifiable credentials do more: they also prove who issued a statement and whether they were entitled to. If you need that, the left route is right. For the evidentiary duty of the Battery Regulation the right one is enough, and it is finished by the deadline.

No architecture workshop, no key ceremony. You start at the model and end with a passport whose integrity anyone can recompute.

  1. Create a model with its mandatory fields

    Category and cut-off date decide which of the 71 EU data points apply. The completeness score shows the state and jumps straight to the missing field.

  2. Fill it with data that carries provenance

    Suppliers deliver through a link, evidence is read and released individually. From release onwards every value hangs in the chain and is thereby evidenced.

  3. Publish and let others verify

    A QR code per unit, a public passport page with its integrity proof, professional access for recyclers and authorities on request and logged.

What no software takes off your desk

Provability is mandatory. The construction is your decision

The regulation requires a passport that is protected against tampering and whose changes are traceable. It prescribes neither a particular cryptography nor a particular data space. Anyone who still needs verifiable credentials usually has a customer or an ecosystem as the reason, not the regulation.

What the regulation does require: the correct data points per category and cut-off date, retrievability through a QR code on the product, and tiered access rights. That is where it is decided whether a passport stands up on the deadline.

Credentials, Catena-X and the deadline

For the battery passport, yes. Both produce a compliant passport under EU 2023/1542. For a cross-industry identity and credential architecture with wallet integration, Batteriepasswerk is not an alternative, because that is Spherity's home ground. So the question is whether you are meeting an obligation or building a trust infrastructure.
No. The regulation requires protection against tampering, traceability of changes, tiered access rights and retrievability through a QR code. How that is implemented technically is left open. Verifiable credentials are one possible implementation, common in data spaces, but not a requirement.
Every stored version gets a SHA-256 fingerprint that contains the fingerprint of the previous version. If someone later changes a value, the fingerprint no longer matches and the chain breaks visibly at exactly that point. To prove that passport data is unchanged since issuance, that is sufficient, and auditors can follow it without extra software.
Then you need a route into the data space. Batteriepasswerk is connectable, AAS export is in preparation, and the REST API v1 serves the data in a structured form. If certification inside the data space is contractually required today, a vendor certified there is the more direct route. We would rather say that plainly than let you walk into a disappointment.

Yes, and it is a common path. The mandatory data is portable: export as JSON and CSV is included in every plan, and the API serves the same content in a structured form. The passport by the deadline is the urgent task; the trust infrastructure is the strategic one.
Yes. REST API v1 pulls models, passports and passport URLs into your own portal and you generate the QR codes yourself, with our brand nowhere in sight.
