EU Battery Regulation: when the battery passport obligation applies
The EU Battery Regulation 2023/1542 mandates: from 18 February 2027, every EV battery, every LMT battery (e-bike, e-scooter) and every industrial battery over 2 kWh needs a digital battery passport when placed on the market - reachable via a QR code on the battery. The obligation hits manufacturers and importers, regardless of company size:

What battery passport software must deliver
On the surface the battery passport is a web page behind a QR code - conformity sits underneath. Six requirements follow directly from the regulation, and it's exactly here that DIY approaches with spreadsheets and static QR generators fail:
Around 90 mandatory data points per model - chemistry, capacity, carbon footprint, recycled content, due-diligence, dismantling information - structured to DIN DKE SPEC 99100 rather than in free-text fields.
One passport per unit, not per model: from a single model template thousands of passports with a unique identifier (ISO/IEC 15459) must be generated - via CSV import or API, not by hand.
The QR code encodes product and serial number in the URL and must be output print- or engraving-ready - permanently resolvable across the entire lifecycle of the battery.
The public, legitimate interest (recyclers, second-life operators) and market surveillance see different data sets - the software must separate role-based access exactly as Art. 77 requires.
Carbon values, material origin and evidence sit with suppliers. A good solution collects them via a self-service link directly - with reminders and an audit trail instead of Excel ping-pong.
The passport must remain reachable even after repurposing or recycling. A link that breaks after a website relaunch violates the regulation - stable hosting is a core requirement, not an add-on.
